Out of the encounter between the separatist Plymouth Pilgrims and the puritans of Massachusetts Bay arose Massachusetts Congregationalism. This group were known as Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries because of their argument that King Henry VIII as the head of the church is not laying good example as a Christian and that his reformation is contrary to the bible tenets, and he is not. Winship looks at the emergence of separatism and puritanism from shared origins in Elizabethan England, considers their split, and narrates the story of their reunion in Massachusetts.
